Types Of Astigmatism - What Are Differents Type Of Astigmatism

Types Of Astigmatism - Astigmatism is a refractive error which makes vision blurred in some degree at any distance. Many people who suffer from myopia (commonly referred to as short-sighted) or hyperopia (known as hyperopic) also have astigmatism, while others only have astigmatism.
Astigmatism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. Instead of being round perfect, like a basketball ball, a corneal astigmatic has elliptical shape, more like a rugby ball.

The light passing through an astigmatic cornea can not focus on a single point on the retina, but it focuses on several points, what makes it impossible for the eye to focus a clear image.
The majority of people with astigmatism using glasses or contact lenses to achieve a better view. Glasses and contact lenses are effective for the majority of people, they are not always ideal for everyone. Among the disadvantages of carrying glasses or lenses are the possibility of that loss or breakage, the discomfort of carrying them and in the case of the glasses, the change in physical appearance.

Types of astigmatism

There are several types of astigmatism:
  • Myopic astigmatism: occurs when either of the two principal meridians of the eye is myopic (where are both, should be in different degrees).
  • The hyperopic astigmatism: in this case, one or both main meridians are hyperopic (where are both, should be in different degrees).
  • Mixed astigmatism: A Meridian is short-sighted, and the other is hyperopic.

Astigmatism is also classified as regular or irregular. In regular astigmatism, the principal meridians are separate 90 degrees (perpendicular to each other). In irregular astigmatism, the principal meridians are perpendicular. The majority of corneal astigmatism is regular astigmatism (eye gives a form of football).
Regular astigmatism is usually also differentiate into 3 types.
Astigmatism direct (or according to the rule): the vertical Meridian is more pronounced (looks like a rugby ball)
Astigmatism reverse (or rule): the horizontal Meridian is more pronounced (looks like a rugby ball but vertical)
Oblique astigmatism: the angle of the curve is between 120 and 150 degrees and between 30 and 60 degrees.
Irregular astigmatism may appear due to a lesion in the eye causing scarring of the cornea. Also from certain types of eye surgery or by Keratoconus, a disease that causes a gradual thinning of the cornea.
